How to Keep your Winter Projects Sustainable

Winter is in full affect, so heat up the ovens and bring out the sewing machines! It’s time to get cozy and creative the Retold way, ensuring your projects stay sustainable and your mountain of leftover fabrics gets put to good use. If you’re someone who loves handmade gifts and reused wrapping paper, you probably don’t want your extra fabric going to the landfill. We put together these ideas to help you recycle your scraps and keep those DIY projects sustainable!

1. Stuffing

Use your fabric scraps to fill up your pillow projects or give some life to handmade dolls and animal toys. You can also create some festive bunting or garlands for the holiday season! Melissa from Polkadot Chair has an amazing autumn leaf garland tutorial, which can be found below!

2. Fabric boxes

You can turn larger scraps into storage bins that can help you keep your home organized. You could even use them to store the rest of your scraps! Craftideas.info has a free, simple tutorial you can find below.

3. Hand warmers

Blanket season is right around the corner, and if you’re looking for any other methods of keeping warm through fall and winter, put your scraps to good use with this super easy sewing project. All you need is a couple of square scraps and some rice. Jo Boyne, a DIY blogger from the UK, has a short and easy-to-follow guide that is perfect for all sewing skill levels.

4. Composting

If you happen to have any 100% natural scraps such as cotton, wool, cashmere, bamboo, hemp, linen, or a blend of any of these, you can add them to your compost bin. It’s a good idea to shred the fabric first so that bacteria can break it down faster. Be sure not to compost any fabric with synthetic traces or artificial dyes, or else you’ll be cultivating a backyard landfill. Check for tags, buttons, zippers, and any labeling that you can responsibly recycle.

5. Retold it

And of course, whether you’re all scrapped out of ideas or just don’t have time to start, we’ve got you covered at Retold Recycling! We just launched a new way to recycle scrap fabric through our Scraps Bag. Fabric scraps don’t get recycled in the same facilities as clothing, so we wanted our DIYers to be able to divert their working materials from landfills. Just like the classic Retold bag, the Scraps Bag comes with a prepaid shipping label. Just load up your unused and unusable textile scraps and send them off! Each Scraps Bag can hold about 5 lbs of textiles, and yes, that does include the synthetic stuff you couldn’t compost. For more information on how our Scraps Bag works.
